july 2026: relentless, and off the map

watercolor night sky turning to gold, a constellation arc across it

july didn't ease in. it opened on the 4th with mars conjunct uranus, which was about the loudest way a month can start. mars is drive, uranus is the unexpected, and together they're a blown fuse: sudden, sharp, impossible to plan around. (for me it was quite literal when my power was knocked out by a lightning storm) two days later the sun squares saturn, and that one is just hard. saturn is limits and consequences, a square is friction, and the pairing hands you the bill whether you're ready or not. we're six days in at this point.

it keeps coming. neptune turns retrograde in aries on the 7th. venus moves into virgo on the 9th. on the 13th mercury meets the sun exactly at 20 degrees of cancer, a cazimi, the clearest point in mercury's whole cycle. that run of transits alone would make july a loud month. yet, our mid summer queen is just getting started.

then comes the second wave. a new moon in cancer on the 14th, a supermoon, which is just a new moon a little closer than usual. barbault's basket from the 18th to the 21st, exact on the 19th and 20th, which we'll get to, because it's why every astrologer out there is paying attention. leo season on the 22nd. mercury turns direct on the 23rd. and on the 26th the lunar nodes change signs.

that one deserves a full stop. the nodes mark the direction of collective fate, and on the 26th they switch: north node into aquarius, south node into leo. this only happens about once every eighteen months, and it closes the virgo and pisces chapter that opened in january 2025. the whole collective story just changed direction. saturn turns retrograde in aries the same day, for good measure.

barbault’s basket

here's the one everyone's watching.

between july 18 and 21, exact on the 19th and 20th, four planets pull up to nearly the same degree at once. jupiter 4 degrees of leo, uranus 4 of gemini, neptune 4 of aries, pluto 4 of aquarius. uranus, neptune and pluto form a grand trine, three planets spaced in an even triangle, the easy angle. jupiter comes in opposite pluto and closes a second triangle. two interlocking triangles that, on the wheel, look like a basket.

the name comes from andré barbault, a french astrologer who spent decades measuring the angles between the slow planets and plotting them against world history. he died in 2019. back in 2011 he wrote that a major global crisis was coming around 2020. covid arrived on schedule. so people listen when his name is on a pattern.

and here's the part worth sitting with: the astrologers who study this for a living don't agree on what it means. that disagreement is the tell.

barbault himself was an optimist. he saw nine planetary cycles all rising at once in 2026 and read it as a “reflowering,” the start of what he called a golden era, societies turning more humanistic. some astrologers read it as the launch of a two-year wave of transformation, breakthroughs in technology, science, and communication big enough to redraw how society works. others don't even like the basket framing, and call it a curve instead, a rolling wave you catch, tied to a coming reinvention of the internet. and another camp keeps pulling everyone back to the floor: research going back thousands of years turns up nothing like this. the software doesn't find it. we're in genuinely uncharted territory, and that means every forecast has a hard limit.

they can't all be right. that's the point.

nobody here is disagreeing because someone ran the math wrong. they're disagreeing because there's no precedent to check against.

so what does it actually mean

it ends huge, and then we wait

july doesn't wind down. it ends on the 29th with the sun meeting jupiter, the pairing old texts called a day of miracles. jupiter is luck and growth, the sun is vitality. a full moon in aquarius lands the same day. the brightest transit of the month, stacked on a full-moon release, right at the end of a month that never let up.

and then the part that's really the whole point of writing this. we don't know what barbault's basket is going to look like, or feel like. a configuration this tight hasn't happened in any lifetime alive right now. there's no memory of it to consult, no last time to hold it up against. astrology usually works by precedent: this happened before, here's what came with it. this one has no before. so anyone selling you a clean prediction is guessing. the move is to name the pattern, lay out what astrologers actually think, and say plainly that the rest is unknown.

into august

it doesn't resolve in july, either. it hands straight to august, which is eclipse season: a solar eclipse on the 12th in leo, a lunar eclipse on the 27th in aquarius. both land on the exact axis the nodes just moved onto on the 26th. that isn't a coincidence, it's the mechanism. july is relentless, and it's still unfolding. august is where it starts to show its shape.
